How To Choose The Right Lightwent Tent
You want to pay attention to a few things when buying a lightweight tent as they differ from the traditional bulky tents with tons of amenities. I have listed what I believe to be of utmost importance when selecting a lightweight tent.
Check out the floors first. Are they "Tub Floors"? This adds significant waterproofing protection in that it lifts floor seams off the ground. Some lightweight tents may or may not have this and it is something to consider if you plan on venturing into a typically wet and rainy area.
Hundreds and thousands of needle holes along the seams let in water. They must be sealed with SeamGrip or some other sealing agent. In some cases, sealing done at the factory is sufficient, but to be safe, an additional, light application of your own won't hurt. Often, applying a light seal to the seam prior to leaving for your trip is enough. Taking along a sealing agent isn't always necessary.
Does your lightweight tent have a vestibule? You don't want to store your gear inside of the tent with you. Doing so prevents unneeded wear and tear of the interior. It is also a great place to cook if the weather picks up.
Ease of set up and take down: How fast can you get your shelter assembled? What if it's raining or you have to move out early? Having a simply designed tent has it's benefits. One being the less parts your tent is made of, the less there is to break. If you opt for an overly complicated tent can sometimes be a burden.
Most lightweight tents are typically open air, but not always. Ventilation is important to note here as sometimes you may be camping in a humid climate with mosquitoes. You'll want to stay cool but also keep the bugs out. Granted most tents have the option of using a bug netting, however not everyone tends to take it along. Venting is also important because you do not want too much accumulated moisture being trapped inside of the tent with you. This can also cause premature wear.
Taking these attributes into consideration leaves us with a better idea of what to look for when buying a lightweight tent. You can't have the same mindset browsing for lightweight tents as you would if you were looking for a larger family size tent. The more you ask questions, the better prepared you will be in lightening your backpacking equipment.
