Creative Cost Cutting Ideas For a Large Family
As we head into the Christmas season, we tend to spend! We spend on food, toys, gifts, and "stuff" that we really don't need.
Our family is in a different position. We are a family with 5 kids ranging in age from 2-14 and we are desperately needing to cut back our expenses in some way. There is a high probability that we may be losing a main income just after Christmas and now seems to be the right time to focus on cutting back our budget as much as we can. If there is no income loss, then at least we know we can start saving!
The first thing that we did was sit down and look at what our costs are now. How much do we absolutely need each month to get by. How much would we like to have to get by. How much income is coming in from other sources. How much more do we need to look at earning.
We have looked at our variable expenses, the tv, phone and the internet in particular, and we have them at the lowest cost possible. When you talk with these companies you need to be friendly, happy and show that you aren't there to "abuse" them. Ask what offers they have, ask about bundles. If you are overusing some of your services, are you better off with the long distance package, or the higher bandwidth? If you can live without either of these services, then go for it! If you need to get a manual answering machine (and save the $8 a month) then you may be cheaper buying the machine in the long run.
Another area to look at is the amount of waste you have. What do you throw out? What good things are being used only once and then ending up in a landfill? Are you buying products like plastic baggies for kids sandwiches? Or for school forms and money? How about your own use, like makeup? Change? There are lots of great products out there like this one at Green School that you can turn to instead. There is a small up front fee, but in the long run there is a whole lot more to be saved by using these. The possibilities for uses with these kinds of products are endless. Be creative with reusable materials and save the dumps at the same time.
Groceries tend to be a big cost in our family. One thing that we have found that works well is to write out a weekly (or bi-weekly or monthly, depending on your pay periods) menu plan. Then write the grocery list strictly from that plan. Plan meals with the same meats so when you are at the store, if you can buy cheaper in bulk then you are saving even more. Only buy what is on your list. The problems arise, for us, when we don't have a list or a plan. We buy a little of this and a little of that and end up having nothing for a decent meal at the end of the day. Planning prevents so much overspending!! There are some nice menu plan sites on the internet that you can print forms off from.
If you have your kids in programs, rethink how important they really are for them! Not all kids need to be in all programs all the time. It is amazing how well they can do when sent outside to play at the park or make a snowman in the front yard. Cutting back on programs not only saves you the program fees, but it also helps out with the need to cut back on the gas consumption in your vehicle. The less running around you have to do, the less stress you will have in your life as well. You will not have to worry about how you are going to get little Johnny here and his sister little Susie there at the same times! Family time is great!!
Family time really can be worth a lot more then ever imagined!! Planning a family fun night, whether it is a game or a walk to the park, can really relieve some of the tension that can be felt when funds are tight. Some of our greatest memories are when we have done the silly things with the kids. Just turning on a camera and letting them act up, or having them plan a play and make tickets and have some snacks. We have been to a night at the theater, in our own house and have been waited on by the kids as well. They think it is great that they can arrange these events for us and they feel really grown up too. It is also nice, from a parents point of view, to see the kids all getting along, not because they have to but because they really want to!
There are so many more ideas that you can add to these. Cost cutting and budget crunching doesn't have to be a difficult thing. It doesn't have to add all that stress to your life. If you just plan ahead and be smart with what you have, then it should be a breeze, and hopefully when you are in a better position, you can get farther ahead by continuing the budget!!
