Nail – the Simplest Fastener
The nail is the simplest and oldest fastener in common use today, but the nail as we know it is a product of the Industrial Revolution. Until the late 18th century, every nail had to be individually forged from a square rod by a blacksmith.
The nail is generally hailed as a Roman innovation, although small nails and tacks cast in copper and other precious metals have been found in ancient Egyptian work. These Egyptian nails were used to hold furniture coverings in place.
This shape of nail had the benefit of four sharp edges on the shank which cut deep into timber and the tapered shank provided friction down its full length. The wood fibers would often swell if damp and bind round the nail making an extremely strong fixing.
You can often date a piece of furniture by studying nails and screws. Furniture predating 1790 will include rose head nails, that were hand-forged by blacksmiths. Wrought nails were fashioned from metal plates rolled in rolling mills to the required thickness and then split by splitting-rollers into nail-rods or split-rods of various sizes, depending on the size and type of nail to be made.
Machines invented about 1790 cut square nails which were widely in use by 1830, although hand forged continued to be used, particularly in frontier areas. Cut nails were made from rectangular strips of iron plate and tapered to a point by a single cut across the plate. The thickness and height of the plate determined the thickness and length of the nail. The early cut nails were "Headed" by hammering, as were all the wrought nails.
It's interesting to know that Thomas Jefferson (author of the Declaration of Independence) added a nailmaking operation to his blacksmith shop in 1794. Up to fourteen young male slaves, aged ten to twenty-one, worked at the forges of the nailery. From 1794 to 1796, when he was retired, Jefferson calculated the efficiency of the nailers, each day weighing their nailrod and the nails they produced.
The measurement unit for nails is the "penny," abbreviated "d." It once referred to the price of a hundred nails of that size, but now it refers to the length. A 2d nail is 2.5 centimeters long; a 60d nail is 15 centimeters long.
By the beginning of the 20th century wire nails, those most used today, were developed. Round steel wire is cut, a head is formed and the end is sharpened to a chisel point all in one machine. The wire is fed into a nail-making machine which can produce up to 700 nails per minute. More than 1,100 types and sizes of nails are manufactured. Although most are fashioned from steel wire, both wire and cut nails are also made of such metals as aluminum, iron, brass, bronze, and copper.
